A Metasenta Project collaboration between the University of Arts London and RMIT University. The Central Exhibition the Drawing Out Conference 2010

Contemporary Australian Drawing 1 was a major component of the RMIT University and University of Arts London Drawing Out conference, held at Storey Hall, RMIT City campus, 7-9 April, 2010. Curated by Dr Irene Barberis, Contemporary Australian Drawing 1 explores the depth and diversity found in the drawings of the particular artists whose works appear in a new survey on Australian drawing.

Drawing as notation, text and discovery

Irene Barberis collaborates once more with RMIT University and University of the Arts London in a major Drawing Project, this time curating over eighty of Australia’s most established artists in an exhibition titled Contemporary Australian Drawing: drawing as notation, text and discovery”, to be held in March 2012 at the ‘Drawing Out’ conference, London, a collaboration between University of the Arts London and RMIT University, Melbourne. At the same venue, the Australian High Commissioner will launch the Palgrave Macmillan publication ‘Contemporary Australian Drawing, Volume I’, commissioned by Dr Barberis through the International Research Centre, Metasenta® hub, and authored by prominent international art critic, author and Deputy Editor of Studio International, Dr. Janet Mackenzie.

Reading the Space was a major drawing survey of 88 of Australia’s most established artists responding to three propositions: Reading the Space: 'Other' Meanings (Irene Barberis); All Writing is Drawing (Michel Butor); and, The Space of Writing, What is That? (Serge Tisserone).

Negotiating the often blurred edges and parameters of ‘drawing’, the exhibiting artists have generously investigated these themes, which have in turn produced a remarkable body of artworks from Australia.
